Reduce household waste due to relocating

Millions of individuals relocate every year. And with these moves, households produce enormous amounts of household waste.

The Environmental Protection Agency is offering a few tips to movers in order to help reduce “move related household waste,” and make your next relocation greener.

MAKE YOUR NEXT MOVE ‘GREEN’

Here are a few ideas to make your next move a little more eco-friendly:

  1. Hold a yard sale. Better to sell the items and extend their useful life than dump them prematurely in a landfill.
  2. Reuse cardboard boxes. Typically they have more than one move in them.
  3. You have to move duffle bags and suitcases too, so you might as well fill them with clothes. Don’t move empty suitcases.
  4. If you still subscribe to the newspaper, use it to wrap items.
  5. Use environmentally preferable packing materials.
  6. Dispose of hazardous materials properly. Don’t just leave them behind in the garage for the next homeowner to deal with.
  7. If not everything sells in the yard sale (see item #1), then consider donating leftover items to charity.
